Turbo-The Power Device

A turbo is just another form of a supercharge. The name has been shortened out of convenience. A turbocharger is a device driven by exhaust gases that increases engine power by pumping air into the combustion chambers. The main advantage of turbocharging is increased peak power. This power is useful when there is a need to go fast, to pass someone, or if you live in an area with mountains, the increased power can be helpful in climbing the steep roads. These devices are commonly used by drag races.  Another advantage is a decrease in exhaust emissions.  Turbochargers recycle the air used by the engine, which decreases the amount of fumes released into the atmosphere.

Turbocharged engines have more specific power over a naturally sounded engine – it means an engine can produce more power for its size. It also reuses of excess exhaust heat (it gets channeled into the turbocharger to increase boost to the engine) means the engine runs more efficiently than NA or supercharged engines.

A turbocharger is smaller, lighter and easier to fit than a supercharger, and it is more consistent than, for example, a nitrous oxide kit and much safer than a nitrous oxide kit.

Size and weight also play a big role in the performance of cars. With fewer cylinders to produce the same amount of power, the overall engine size and weight will be less than a normal engine. A lighter car is more efficient. To generate the same amount of power with a regular engine, you need to make it bigger and heavier.

As we all know that with all advantages come disadvantages. So let’s have a look at the disadvantages of the turbo.

There are a lot of disadvantages to turbos but the good overweigh them. Big turbos provide top end speed, so accelerating off the line you might not have the power needed. Sometimes at lower rpms exhaust gases backflow when they hit the impellers, causing bad combustions. Installation requires a lot of work. If using larger turbos wear and tear can be a concern on many of the engines parts.

After all the devices cannot work alone in the car engine but also require a device called an intercooler. As the name says it is a cooling system. By adding a turbo to the car the speed and performance is going to increase this will however cause a lot of heat in the engine. This is why you got to install the intercooler. There are also many other parts that need to be changed in the car if you consider putting a turbo. If the car is fast it also requires a device that cuts the speed and slows the car down. That is the brakes; you got to ensure that you have stronger brakes that are able to break these high speeds of the car.
